The PR range however is a single-layered ceramic film with more reflection. Here is an example of an installation done in Auckland recently. This room has windows on 3 sides, which makes it hard to achieve good privacy.

I read blogs and forums about window tinting. In many of the forums for car clubs, the questions about Huper Optik are raised. People want to know why Huper Optik is more costly than other tints.
If you buy on price, you will not get Huper Optik ceramic film, but a dyed or if you're lucky, a metalized film.


Multi-layer, dyed film vs Huper Optik

The cost of buying ceramic film is at least 2 times that of standard window film for the dealer. If you use the dyed films offered on the internet, that difference can be as high as 10 times the cost in material.
You can compare it to buying gold jewellery. The cheap film are like gold plated jewellery, looking good for a while, but soon the coating scratches and you develop skin rashes. Then you have the 9carat gold, the film equivalent would be metalized window film. It looks good, will last the distance and has value. Nano-ceramic window film would be the equivalent to 18carat gold. More value, a deeper colour, hard wearing and a status symbol.

Now you can't expect to get 18carat gold for the price of costume jewellery.

Yesterday, I was asked to provide a quote in a commercial situation.

People facing windows, using the computer. The landlord had some of these roller blinds installed... in white! Poor buggers! That white material just made the whole thing more glary! If they would have used black, it would have been better, but then of course the heat would have been worse... can't win...

In today's abundance of marketing, how can one tell what's good and what's not?
As window tinting is a specialist trade, the average person would not know the difference. So they go by brand recognition. Great, everybody knows of 3M.

Interestingly enough, very few people in the window tinting trade actually use 3M. We have a case here in New Zealand, where a company promotes itself as "accredited 3M installer". Guess what, so are we, but we don't promote the fact. These people now offer cheap on-line deals and their customers think they will get a 3M film. Far from it...SK Networks????? Who are they?

We know most of the film types from the good manufacturers, and we chose to use Johnson Window Films for the conventional range. For the top of the line, you can't beat Huper Optik in looks, clarity and performance. We have even been known to use 3M, when specified by the client, or to match existing window tint.

Window tinting vs tinted glass

Some people have tinted glass installed, thinking that it will give them the same protection as glass with window film. To some degree, they are right. Tinted glass can give them privacy and cut down on glare. It has less UV transmission than clear glass, but on average still lets in 20%. Bearing in mind that UV is a big issue here in NZ, any UV transmission is bad.

Tinted glass tends to heat up considerably, making it uncomfortable for people nearby. Most of the heat is absorbed into the glass and only convection from the outside takes it away to some degree.

When we apply window film to clear glass, we minimise the heat absorption and reflect more of it, thus making it more effective.We also block 99% or more of the UV. Window film helps to keep glass in place, in the event of an accident, but is not strong enough to comply with human impact standards, unless designed to do so.

With car tinting, we have this strange problem of restricted tinting, in most cases to 35%, and yet tinted glass can be really dark and still comply..... go figure!

Window tinting in winter? Why you should consider it now!

Why should you have your windows tinted now, in the winter.
I sometimes have people tell me that they will wait until spring before having their glass tinted, because they like the warmth coming in. Great logic.... window film is designed to stay for years, so what will happen the following winter???? Well, a moderate tint makes very little difference to heat retention or loss. Darker reflective tints, used in commercial situation can make a room colder in winter. Film with higher heat absorption, such as dark, non-reflective tints will actually make an area close to the glass warmer.

You should have your windows tinted now, because:
- the winter sun is much lower in the sky, letting in more direct sunlight and UV.
- you might get better deals, discounts are offered to entice customers.
- the waiting list is shorter, so the installation is quicker.

UV protection from window film

In new Zealand we experience one of the highest levels of UV in the world. The damage UV causes is well documented and we are aware of skin cancer, melanomas and damage to the eyes. Hence we are told to wear sunscreen and glasses. The same UV also is a big part of fading of furnishings in our homes, at work and in our cars and boats.

By nature, window film is polyester based. Polyester breaks down under UV, so good quality window film has at least one layer of UV inhibitor to protect the film. Consequently anything behind the window tint is protected from UVA and UVB.

Another year is almost over. Another year of challenges, victories, surprises and learning.

Window films are constantly evolving, with new products and suppliers entering the market.

This year has once again shown some of our competitors trying to cut costs by using cheaper films. We are quickly approaching the quality sold on Trade Me (NZ equivalent of e-bay) sold by "professionals". Very quickly, these films will break down and neither the customer nor the installer will be happy.
Although we have introduced a "budget" line of films, we are using more and more of the top quality Huper Optik ceramic window films. Cost is secondary, if the product is vastly superior to the rest of the market.

Huper Optik was applied at Kelly Tarlton, Mansion House on Kawau Island, MOTAT, the private residence of Lucy Lawless, Hawkes Bay Hospital, the Rendezvous Hotel in Auckland and literally hundreds of applications on private homes, cars and businesses.

I have been doing this line of work for over 15 years now. It started as a part time job, to supplement my other activities. I learned from a friend. After some time, I became his prime installer..... then we fell out. He did not like me becoming a competitor. I lost my contract.

Historic home gets Huper Optik for protection

Historic Mansion House set on Kawau Island is under the protection of Department of Conservation. The home contains a number valuable treasures that need to be looked after for the future.

Due to its location, right by the sea, the building is exposed to the corrosive nature of the sea air and salt sprays. Traditional window films tend to corrode and lose the ability to effectively protect the interior. My business partner did actually install light metallised films many years ago. These films have now gone completely colourless and started to deteriorate badly.

Over the last few days one of our installers has spent time to strip the old film and replace it with a combination of Huper Optik C50 and C60. These films offer superb protection, without changing the character of the historic homestead.

What is important? Price or quality?

You know the type, calling every possible company in the Yellow Pages, asking for the best price of tinting....... what is this person expecting? A good job, using good materials? Reality check!

You can buy a loaf of bread for a Dollar or $4. It's bread, right? Sure.
The cheap loaf may weigh 450g and look big.
The $4 loaf probably weighs 750g of around the same size.
You eat some of each bread on the day. Fine.
You may now make a sandwich the next day. Guess what, the cheap loaf of bread is all dry & hard, you throw it away. The expensive loaf is still soft for the next 5 days.

Window film may be a sheet of polyester stuck to your windows. It does not matter what brand, who installs it and how it performs..... right?

Well, that is how some people look at it, and sadly, that is how some dealers treat it too. The cheaper the better.

We have many people contacting us, just wanting a quote over the phone or via email.

As a concept it is fine and can give people a rough idea of the costs. If the request is for tinting cars, it is the most effective way, providing the customer knows what to look for and ask. Unfortunately very few people have this knowledge.

At Tint Pro, we do not tint cars.

When it comes to an estimate for tinting homes or commercial premises, a phone quote has the potential for disaster. A prospective client may phone around for a price, based on a square meter rate and then invite the cheapest for a quote. This is such an easy trap to fall into and from a professional point, it is the easiest way to deceive.

Luckily, when people call us, they get straight answers and often we have managed to prevent disaster. The number of people in our trade who lack the knowledge or experience is frightening. Modern glass is becoming so complex and costly, using the wrong film can crack the glass, or break the seals in double glazed units. Unless you are dealing with a window film professional, you carry that risk. Huper Optik Ceramic 70

Huper Optik has recently released a new high performance film, offering superb heat rejection with a virtually clear appearance.
I have now personally installed this product in a few locations and still cannot comprehend how such a light film can keep so much heat away.

As the picture shows, you can hardly detect the film on the glass, compared to the open ranch slider.

When the sun reached inside, the wooden floor was heating up considerably, but once the film was applied, it cooled down to almost the same as in the shade. The performance was evident in the temperature of the glass, which increased with the window film installed.

Ceramic 70 is ideal for situations where you cannot afford to lose any light or visibility, such as shop windows, forward facing glass in a boat or apartments, where normally window film is not allowed.

Although more costly than other ceramic window film, the extra benefits more than compensate for the extra costs. There simply is no better film than can confidently be used in a coastal situation, as ceramics will not corrode, unlike standard metallised or dyed films.

Full on window tinting

The days may be longer...... but not long enough!

Our work load is very heavy, with the usual end of year rush.
Now we have some extra projects for schools and builders, making me put on my tool belt more often.
This is not me, by the way, but one of our very experienced guys installing Huper Optik ceramic film in this boat.
We could instantly feel the temperature drop below the film. The cabin is now much cooler and people don't fry sitting in the sun.

This school is getting refurbished and the new computer suites needed to have glare and heat reduced, as well as offering security. As usual, running on a tight schedule, a quick response and quality installation is the key to success.

We have a couple of Huper Optik jobs booked on Waiheke Island, a sizeable job in Scott's Landing tomorrow and work both Saturday and Sunday in the city.

There is still a lot of ignorance about ceramic films. Those who embrace it are getting great sales. Almost daily, customers are asking about ceramic films now.

Why ceramics?

Customers demand performance. They want a clear film to stop fading. We know better, don’t we?

So you show them a metallised 50% or 35% film for protection, but of course they don’t like it. You are now worried about losing a sale, so you give in to their desires and show them a 60% or worse, a clear film. You may get the sale, but are you giving them what they need? (The dealer's integrity)

Why do car tinters want to tint house windows? Business can't be good for them!

There are fundamental differences in both application and film properties.

It is a little like a plumber working with electrics.. water does not mix with electrical currents.... unless you know what you do!

Very few window film installers are familiar with both types. The result is usually a poor job, broken glass and unhappy clients.

Just today, I went to a place where other companies have given a quote on tinting a home.To view the film, a sample is often stuck to a window.....

....but not with the liner removed! Car tinters or people who do not install film do not know this. Flat glass films are made with a "dry adhesive" it creates a chemical bond with the glass. If only a small sample is attached to the glass, there is a huge risk to leave a permanent mark.

Lessons:
- If they don't know these basics, how on earth can you trust their advice?
- Look for window tinters who specialise in flat glass tinting for your home or business. If they tint cars as well, be very careful!
- The same goes, if you want your vehicle tinted. Find a specialist.

The best film in the world is only as good as the installer.

The best installer in the world is only as good as the quality of the film.

Not every window film is equal.

Not every company promotion is "honest". A business established 25 years ago can change ownership and effectively give you 1 year's experience.

Not every window film performance claim is "honest". A 97% IR rejection is only in a very small band of the overall solar heat transmission. The only true performance is measured by NFRC recognised measurements.

How can you, the consumer, tell the difference?

First, look at the company you're dealing with... are they a member of Master Tinters? If they are not, ask yourself: "Why not?"

Second, look at the window film manufacturer. Are they trying to blind you with their "reputation"? Any of this nonsense of "on-angle" performance, or being the "world's largest manufacturer"does this really make them the right one for you?

Here is my advice.

Ask the person who will give you the consultation how long they have been INSTALLING window film themselves.

Ask the person how long the present owner has owned the company.

Ask the person about the NFRC ratings of the film they are proposing.

Another successful Huper Optik day

Our first job was at Kelly Tarlton's underground cafeteria. Two huge windows overlooking the Waitemata with Auckland in the background.

The challenge here was to cut the glare and heat, but not diminish the view at night. One of our competitors suggested a 20 silver. (This is a highly reflective film, turning into a mirror at night with the lights turned on) Wow, this guy really knows what he's selling.........

Luckily, we presented a solution which will let visitors enjoy the beautiful night line of Auckland, by using Huper Optik C20. Under normal circumstances, this film would be too dark, but here it was the right choice.

You can see the difference in the two windows, with the left one not tinted yet.

I then finished a job in a home, where the film had to protect furniture and fabrics from fading, without making a visual difference. Again, Huper Optik was the right choice. This time the choice was C60, although we do prefer the C50 for extra effectiveness. This was in the home of a Kiwi iconic warrior princess.

To finish off the day, a boat owner was looking for heat protection for the cabin of his launch. He was previously shown a shiny metallised film.... effective, but on a boat?

Then it was suggested he uses a prestige film. Supposed to have 97% IR heat rejection! Yeah right! In a very narrow width of the solar spectrum, but what about the rest of the sun's damaging power?

Anyway, when questioned about warranty on a boat, the person hesitated........ and suggested the owner should contact us...........

..........so, we are installing Huper Optik C40 next week. 10-year warranty in marine applications, because ceramics will not corrode in marine or coastal environments.

I am disturbed by the amount of bad advice is given by some competitors. After around 15 years in this industry, I still don't know everything, but at least our company is constantly striving to keep up with new developments. Window tinting and window films.... not everybody knows about the products or the benefits..... that is understandable. It is a specialist field.

BUT!!!! You'd expect a person promoting and selling window films to know about the various types of films... wouldn't you? Especially somebody with years of "experience" and a member of the industry association.. Right?

A consumer needs advice and guidance.

A dealer should be aware of new products, new technology and the difference in performance and appearance. A dealer should know the advantages and drawbacks of each type of film.

So, when the client asks about ceramic window films, the dealer should have some knowledge, other than:" Sorry, I don't know anything about it"

How can a client possibly get the best solution to their problem, if their "Consultant" cannot be bothered to keep up with new trends, products or understand that there is more than one manufacturer of window films? Reality is, there is a difference in optical clarity, there are good and bad films out there.

Stop the blind brand loyalty and focus on your clients different needs!

Scaffold of success... in window tinting

I have been told about reaching the top of the ladder of success.
I've been there.... a couple of times! ..... and now, due to Safety & Health regulations, we are climbing the scaffold of success.

We had to eliminate the light from the high windows, which were interfering with a projector screen. The curtains left a large gap when the sun was shining.

The best way was to completely block the light with a special vinyl. It is black on the inside, with a white exterior finish. The white prevents the glass from heating up. If it's black, a lot of heat is absorbed, possibly breaking the glass.

Window film would have reduced the light significantly, but due to the location of the glass, the client opted for a complete block.

Just another facet of our business. Most of our work is using Huper Optik ceramic window film, where optical clarity is crucial. We use Johnson window films where functionality and a budget are the criteria.

Every time when I go to work makes me wonder what the day will bring.

Being the first in the office, I have some time to clear emails and send messages, before the rush starts.

Sometimes the calls come in at 7.30, usually from glaziers needing urgent jobs done. There goes our schedule! As the summer season approaches, we get busier and our lead time increases to around 2 weeks.

Usually based in New Zealand, we had a call to action in Vanuatu.

Having a home right on the beach on this beautiful tropical island is a dream for most of us. Along with the beauty you generally encounter some unusual needs. Small islands do not have a ready power supply, so expensive generators and solar panels are installed to produce electricity. Forget air conditioning.

After an unforgettable journey by air, a long wait at a provincial airport, followed by an hour long flight in a noisy sardine can I was met by the owner. We then took a ride in comfortable taxi to the inflatable dinghy. By now it was pitch black and we had to navigate past the sunken boat in the narrow channel and avoid the reef. Then it was a 3km crossing to the island, not knowing if there were logs or submerged obstacles on the way.......

...... and there it was...... home for the next few days...... in Paradise!

Waking up to a chorus of birds at 5am and the gentle lapping of the waves on the beach..... great stuff..... just a little more sleep, thanks!

The day was already starting to get hot, and it was not even 9am.

Time for action!

By lunchtime I had finished applying Huper Optik C30 in the lounge. Seldom have I worked as quickly just to keep cool! The room was noticeably cooler and the glare reduced to a pleasant level..... without losing any optical clarity.

Window film is the perfect solution is this tropical climate. But beware, not ever film is suitable. Dyed window film is not effective enough and will turn purple, metallised film corrodes from the salt content. The only film type that really works is the ceramic type.

The almighty advertising dollar can make a huge difference by fooling people into believing one brand is superior over another.

You have the experienced small business operator, having done it for years. He has the experience and knowledge, what he lacks is the time and money to tell the world.

Window film, cheap high performance?

Have you ever wondered why you get different prices for "the same" product? Have you ever bought the cheapest, just to find out it did not do what you expected?

Well, window film is no different........

You can buy your film from internet trading places, such as TradeMe in New Zealand, the equivalent of e-bay. Most traders promote their car films for a few bucks a roll. "Easy to install" they say..... I beg to differ. Blocking out heat, scratch resistant... yeah right!

The same goes for window film for your home..... you can get the cheapest quote from some guy, who writes the price on the back of a business card..... what you think you are going to get?

You get the chance of having to strip off the bad quality film after a couple of years, because it looks ugly and you can't see out the windows any more.... "But the guy was giving me his word that he will personally guarantee the film!" you say.... well, try to get hold of him now!

Strange, his number is not working any more! Did you get a warranty? A receipt? No? I wonder why?

You may have guessed by now that I do have a certain passion for window films, tinting and anything to do with my trade of around 15 years.

Apart from talking with my peers and competitors or the communications with my suppliers (who are the manufacturers, not distributors) I get a lot from the various blogs on the internet.

One prominent blogger is Mike Feldman, from Tampa, Florida. I would never get away with the sort of entries he gets out there every day. This guy has a passion to get the best deal for his clients. He also has an impressive history with 3M. Strangely, after all these years, he now runs his own business with the best films (in his view) on the market....... and none of them are made by 3M! Why would that be?

Other blog entries are mainly made by smaller businesses promoting car tinting or DIY places. They try to make you believe window films are easy to install. Let me tell you, I have seen many "professional" installations that have gone horribly wrong.... how on earth can a DIY'er do a good job?

My attitude has always been to offer the best product for a situation. Who makes the product is important to a point, because the manufacturer must provide service, quality, knowledge and back it up with action, not excuses. I will not commit to a single supplier, because nobody makes a complete range of quality window films. This includes the widths of rolls, availability of stock and their attitude towards the market.

Window film to compliment the building

The owner of this food market wanted to reduce the glare in the upstairs offices and compliment the look of the rest of the building with a non-reflective film.

We chose Johnson Window Films NS15, because the glass is at risk of thermal stress, if the absorption is too high. The safest option would have been a reflective film, but this was not an option for this market.

If the glass is tempered, we can use any film type, without any risk, but if the glass is normal (annealed) or laminated, we do need to be careful and in some cases, film is not the right option.

Thermal stress is a problem, catching out the unwary and creating unhappy clients & dealers alike. It takes a lot of knowledge and experience to confidently find the right solution to satisfy the client's needs and minimize glass failure. Window Film and the movers & shakers

My email receives around a dozen messages a day with keywords of "window film" "window tinting" "Huper Optik" etc.
Most of these are blog entries from the public asking questions about car tinting or bragging about how dark their illegal tints are. Then we have the entries from other window film dealers, boring the pants off the readers, with one outstanding exception:

Here is a good example of being brave enough to tell it how it is, instead of being PC.

There also so many entries, written by authors who have absolutely no knowledge of window films. They make these outrageous claims of "keeping heat in". A single layer of glass with a film applied simply does not keep winter heat in. Period.

And then we have this one here, using plutonium! What?

One thing is for sure, it is amusing.

A van in our neighbourhood has some great sign writing on the side: "Sick of the cowboys? Give the Indians a try!"

The latest window film from Huper Optik!

The quest for better heat rejection with very light window films has resulted in yet another breakthrough from Huper Optik.

Their Ceramic 70 has an incredible visual light transmission of 71%, which is just a fraction darker than clear glass. It blocks 91% of Infra-red heat, with a total solar energy rejection of 47%. You would expect this type of performance from a film twice as dark.

Being a ceramic film, it is the only type of window film suitable for marine installation, as it will not corrode, unlike standard films.

The perfect window film to compliment sun filters

During winter, the sun is much lower in the sky, creating a glare problem.

In commercial buildings we can use darker films than in residential homes. The larger lower windows use the sun filter blinds, the upper windows have been tinted with NS15, a Joh nson Window Film.

This combination maintains the aesthetics of the building, without adding a silvery look on the outside. Note the difference, where there is no film installed yet.

From the inside, glare is reduced to acceptable levels.

It is the time of year.. old window film looks bad!

It is winter, homes are heated at night, the nights are getting cold and condensation forms on the glass.

Old window film, where the scratch resistant surface has been attacked by UV, chemicals or old age, is now noticeable. You will see shiny patches, usually around the bottom of the pane, particularly around 2 inches from the corners. This is where the condensation is at its worst. When you wipe it (when it's dry) you will see very small, powdery particles, I like to call it "fairy dust".

Time to replace the film.

Call us, we can remove the film and replace it with a new film which should last around 20 years. Don't fall for the "Lifetime guarantee" spiel, nothing lasts a lifetime. We have come across some "life time guaranteed" film, needing replacing after as little as two years. ( We have not used this brand since 2001)

Winter, low sun, window film...and strawberries?

About this time of year, we get the phone calls from people wanting to remove old window films. There are a couple of reasons for this.

Firstly, homes get condensation at night. Having the windows cycle from wet & cold to dry & hot causes the scratch resistance to break down on old film. It can also highlight a defect in the manufacturing in newer window films. (There are a couple of manufacturers with rather large warranty claims at present.)

The broken down layer turns powdery and makes the glass look dirty. The more you try cleaning it, the more of the surface is removed.

The second reason customers complain is caused by the low sun making the glass look smoky. I have this in my own home; it only happens this time of year and goes away, when the sun reaches higher into the sky.

For the second reason, we have a solution and it should be addressed at the time of the consultation, prior to having the film installed.

All traditional window films are either metallised or dyed. The particles in the dyes or metals make the light break, giving the smoky appearance. Our Huper Optik nano-ceramic window films use particles much smaller than the other methods. ( A little bit like comparing the size of a strawberry to the size of its seeds) The light passes through the film without hindrance, thus keeping the glass looking clear.

You can see the difference in the pictures on the left. The top windows are tinted with a metallised film. Against a dark background, the glass is very smoky.

The picture below shows the same windows, with Huper Optik C50 installed to just the two panes in the front. Observe, the other windows are still smoky!

The entire day was spent on soaking up the latest in the window film industry, with a demo about the best way of tinting a back window of a car and the risk evaluation of a window film on particular glass types.

We had an interesting hour about best business practices in a difficult economy.
A lot of time was also devoted to the way Master Tinters are self-regulated, the criteria of becoming a member and how to best offer peace of mind to our customers and clients.

As I'm writing this, I am relaxing with a glass of wine after 4 days of activity at the Hutchwilco Boat Show.

This was our first time at a boat show, promoting window film. In the past, when we used to promote our conventional films, the marine industry has never been seen as the ideal environment for promotion of window films. We tinted this sailing yacht a few months ago.

SY "Thalia" underwent a refurbishment when the owner wanted to protect the interior from the effects of UV and the heat destroying the fabrics and wooden furniture & trims.

The only choice of window film we could suggest with confidence was Huper Optik. This nano-ceramic film offers superb optical clarity, without being reflective. Ceramics are not prone to corrosion, unlike the traditional metallised or dyed films.

The captain did not want to compromise any visibility or change the character of the vessel, but wanted performance. We ended up using C50, a very lightly tinted window film with a 99% plus UV and an IR heat rejection above 60%.

Our installation went smoothly, having to work in with all the other trades. The film had to be fitted after all the varnishing and painting, but before the soft furnishings went back in place.

A few weeks later, another yacht of similar size, the "Silver Tip", needed old perished window film replaced. Once again, we did the job to the owner's delight, ending up with more work than originally planned.

It was nice to see the two yachts racing a few months later in Auckland. New Zealand enjoys a leading position in yacht building and refurbishing, with excellent facilities, craftsmen and cost effectiveness, due to the New Zealand Dollar's exchange rate. Without any further information, you are asked to make up your mind. Well would you buy a $1000 trip, or opt for $200 instead?

Let's face it $1000 bucks is a lot of money!

The $200 is far more reasonable, is it not? But then again.......

...... hard, isn't it?

Well, what will it take to help you make up your mind?

"I need more information!" you say.

Well, exactly. Information is going to make all the difference. It will allow you to weigh up the different options.

The very same applies to window film and tinting.

You can get the $200 option or the $1000. Or perhaps there is something in between......

Just yesterday I had a customer call me, accepting my quote. Although our prices were a little higher than our competitors, she chose to run with us. Why? Because I gave her the information, helping her to evaluate the options. I encouraged her to get other quotes.

E-bay & TradeMe window films

We see a lot of sales on TradeMe, the New Zealand equivalent of e-bay. The film sold is usually from Asian countries, very cheap and of complete rubbish quality.

They may get away with it in other countries, but in NZ? No way! Six months later, bubbles, turning purple and in some cases it falls off by itself.

We have measured the UV rejection of these films. They very seldom have more than 70%. The heat stopped is around 12%.

Now compare this to a metallised quality film, with a lifetime warranty, if installed by a qualified tinter!

No UV transmission, and 48% heat rejected! This film is colour stable, will not bubble or fall off!

So why are people buying the cheap film?

Well, I think it is either ignorance or our industry needs to educate the public more!

The adage still stands: You get what you pay for!

My advice: Deal with a member of Master Tinters and you will get good quality in both product & workmanship!

Here is a good example of a metallised film losing its colour over time. The film shown is a very dark Neutral 20, with a pressure sensitive (PS) adhesive.

One good thing with PS adhesives is the easier removal. Most flat glass films are made with a dry adhesive (DA), which is very hard to remove and on toughened glass posing a risk of scratching the glass.

Nowadays, we prefer to install Huper Optik ceramic film on toughened glass in particular, not just for its performance and clarity, but also for easier removal, when it's time to be replaced after many years of service.

Of course, ceramic film cannot de-metallise or discolour, ever, unlike the recently introduced multi-layered films.

Hi Tech Window Films in NZ

I read a lot of blogs and look up websites promoting window films and window tinting. One of the most active contributors is "The Inner Circle" by Mike Feldman, based in Florida.

Mike has vast experience in selling the 3M brand of window films and is well aware of the tactics and spins such a big company uses. Just over two years ago, Mike has set up his own window film dealership. I followed with interest how he started with Vista and Huper Optik films and gradually added other brands into his offering, with one very obvious omission.

Personal feelings aside, Mike has used his knowledge to evaluate the various products on merit. Important factors are performance, optical clarity and optimal size of the film.

Florida has different needs and challenges compared to NZ. They have hurricanes, we may experience the odd small tornado. Their climate is very hot, ours is hot for 3 months, and in the South Island it gets very cold in winter. We have one of the highest levels of UV in the world, they don't have that problem at all

Our industry is relatively small. The entire usage of window films for the whole of NZ is probably less than what one manufacturer supplies into Florida. The majority of tinters stick to the basics here, promoting the same old films, year after year. They are reluctant to look at new films, if they are more costly. Their mentality is cost driven. They do not consider the customers needs, or don't want to give them options of higher spec films, in the fear of losing a sale.

Our customers demand performance. There is no excuse for the windows to hazy, when the low sun hits the glass. Using nano-ceramic technology, Huper Optik films are so much clearer to see through; paying that premium is well worth it. We give our customers the options, show them the difference and let them reach their own conclusions.

Who do you trust with your window tinting?

There is a saying out there about experience. Some people claim numbers of years of experience. The sad reality is, that their experience is often just one year.... repeated a number of times.

Why am I saying this?

I personally know a large percentage of the window tinters in New Zealand. Some use the films we distribute and use, others use films from different suppliers. A small number of the tinters have been in the business for longer than me.

My astonishment lies in the lack of knowledge so many people in the trade have. Some very basic facts, such as the need to identify the glass type, prior to recommending a film type, can make the difference of glass breaking or not!

The good distributors all have access to technical back up. It is usually available from the manufacturer, who has a technical and R&D section. I use their help when required. What is happening with the downturn, the distributors are down sizing their staff and subsequently the level of support. We now have people who have never installed a single piece of film advising others how to do the job! In some cases, the storeman is trying to help!

With the introduction of compulsory double glazing to new buildings in New Zealand, understanding the properties and window film becomes crucial. Dealing with an inexperienced person or company with a lack of knowledge can be very costly in the long run.

Perhaps I am fortunate to have access to the manufacturers to gain more knowledge. There is no excuse, however, for ignorance. I learned everything by showing interest and asking questions. Does the person you're dealing with have the right knowledge?

After all, even the best film in the world is no good, if the dealer does not understand the basics!

Huper Optik may be the smaller cousin in the big world of window tinting, but is certainly making enough noise to get noticed.

I had a client call me a couple of days ago, wanting more info between our Huper Optik ceramic films and another competitor's. As it turned out, our competitor was also promoting Huper Optik, but failed to leave the client any manufacturer information or recommend the manufacturer's web site. This competitor did also leave misleading information about the warranty.

The client was feeling more comfortable giving us the job, because he read all the "propaganda" as he called it and did his home work. We both laughed about it, but the underlying message here is: Be generous with information, do not try to keep things from clients.

Are we biased? Probably! Why not? We have seen and experienced the what is being offered and sold to our New Zealand clients. Due to the extreme UV, New Zealand needs the best window films, or they will not last. We have seen so many films develop ugly signs of deterioration after just a few short years. These films last many years longer in other parts of the world.... but not here!

My Floridian friend is happily promoting some brands, which have not stood the test of time here and are subject to huge warranty claims. They will last in the US, but not here. We used some of these films up until 2001 and for the last 3 years, we had to pass a growing number of warranty claims onto the distributor. The numbers have substantially grown with the introduction of another range of window films, which are failing after as little as 2 years! Luckily we have never used these ourselves, so our customers are safe.

Should we be biased? You bet! It is in your interest.

Our friend from Florida, who was employed by 3M in senior positions in the window film division for around 33 years is now an avid user & supporter of Huper Optik. On the left is a multi-layered high performance film (not ceramic) heavily promoted by architects. On the right is the equivalent patented multi-layer Huper Optik nano-ceramic film. Although very similar in appearance, the film on the left has the colour in the top, scratch resistant layer only. Adding the colour and heat-absorbing dye into this layer appears to weaken its structure. The Huper Optik on the right did get scratched, but did not lose the colour or performance. The ceramic layer is embedded in between the layers and continues to perform!

And to top it off, clients choosing "the brand" pay so much more just for the name. I remember a children's story, called "The Emperor's Clothes"... time will tell. Huper Optik has been around 10 years now, these others have just entered the game. Patents are great!

DIY Window Tinting (not cars)

If you are considering to tint your own windows, here is an article to help you understand some basics.

We find some people achieve reasonable results, tinting their own windows. Some people struggle, especially with wooden framed, colonial or large ranch sliders.

Factors to consider when doing your own installation are:

have you done it before with satisfactory results?
are you a handy person?
there is no product guarantee with DIY film
if a professional installer does it for you, let them use their own film. You will not save any money buying the film your self.
Do not buy window film from hardware shops or similar; they do not stock good quality films.
Although a quality film costs more, it is well worth it. It will last a lot longer and perform much better than the cheaper films.
Once you have chosen the film, there is no guarantee that it will be the correct grade for your home. You cannot return the film. So make sure you listen to the advise of the vendor. (Assuming they know what they are selling)

Where is the tint in window tinting?

Today's window films are becoming lighter and lighter. Many of them do not have a noticeable tint or change of colour, once installed.

Traditional metallised films are getting edged out by more sophisticated and spectrally select ceramic, multi-layered or powder coated films. As a rule, these films are more costly and therefore more expensive to the client.

The benefits are mainly in the amount of heat gain lost, meaning that they keep more of the heat out. Some manufacturers are promoting infrared reduction of 97%. This of course is complete nonsense; the 3% transmission is measured in very specific wavelengths only, not across the range.

We use Huper Optik nano-ceramic window films, because the brand is proven over the years, the optical clarity is unsurpassed and the performance is built into the film, rather than into the top layer.

Although there are some films with slightly higher performance, they can have drawbacks in clarity, stability or scratch resistance. They also tend to be a lot more expensive than Huper Optik.

Window tinting on laminated glass

Laminated glass consists of two layers "glued" together by an acrylic layer (PVB).

The purpose of using laminated glass is primarily for safety reasons. In the event of an impact the glass shatters, but is held in place, without breaking and exposing shards. Car windscreens are made of laminated glass.

The PVB interlayer blocks 99% of the Ultraviolet rays, the same amount good quality window films do. Sound stop glass, containing a thicker interlayer is an exception to this rule, as a different compound is used; one which does not block the UV.

Sometimes we encounter problems with laminated glass, if the edges are cut rough or have cracks and chips. Usually invisible once glazed, the glass can be in place for years and when window film is applied, it suddenly cracks within a short time.

We are always very careful when recommending a window film with high heat absorbing properties. When the film heats the glass unevenly, caused by partial shading for example, the inner layer of the glass expands at a different rate to the outside layer, causing heat stress and then cracks. In some cases we recommend exterior film to minimise the risk. Johnson Window Films have now released a range of external window films other than the traditional reflective silver.

Always deal with an experienced window tinter who can identify different glass types and help to avoid potential disasters by recommending the correct film types. Where possible, deal with a member of Master Tinters in New Zealand.

Here is another myth exposed: Blocking the UV alone will not stop fading! Unless you reduce the direct heat and lessen the light, your fade protection is never good enough.

Save the Piano!

Today, I had to help out on an installation, simply because I'm tall!

A while back we did a quote on a home on a lifestyle block. Last week I had a call from the home owner: "I'm getting an old Grand Piano and don't want it to get eaten by the sun!"

So today, we went there, ladders, plank and film in hand.

Because I'm taller than our number one Huper Optik installer, I had to go up the ladder!

I love using Huper Optik ceramic films, they look fantastic, compared to the standard films, and have a much better performance.

Climbing the ladder, I could feel the heat rising. Cleaning the glass got me sweating even though it was cloudy... great.... putting the film up in the sun is hard work!

So I get ready to unroll the film on the large top windows...... and the sun comes out! Now the skill factor kicks in..... no problem..... the master is at work!

What a difference!..... as soon as the film (Huper Optik C40) is in place, the heat has gone! Now we can work in comfort.

Can you tell which window does not have any film installed? (Both photos have been taken with one window not tinted)

As you can see, the visual difference is almost unnoticeable, and yet the comfort and protection are immediate! The piano, with the traditional black finish, was cool to the touch where the piano was shielded by the film. The part hit by the direct sun was very warm, almost hot.

Is there a difference in window films? You bet! Window tinting would have been much more obvious with traditional film.... and less effective!

The home owner was very happy for two reasons... first, her new piano was protected ...... and.... the cob webs were removed from the high parts! At no extra charge...... we aim to please....

Window tinting...... what is really needed to stop fading? The facts!

Just about every day we have people call us, wanting a clear film to block the UV.

Nothing wrong with this request...... so why do they want to stop UV? ....... to stop fading of their carpet or new lounge suite..... Great, so they want fade protection..... That is a different request.

A few weeks ago, I went to a customer's home, where we installed Huper Optik window film. It was a sunny day and the sun shining through the tinted windows.

Directly behind the glass was a magazine, with a large black printed area. It felt cool to the touch, the glass was very warm beside it.

We shifted the magazine to an area, which had no window film on the glass. Within a couple of minutes, the black printed area of the magazine was hot.... the glass was cold.

Not everything is what it looks like!

If you subject your furniture & carpets to the full brunt of the sun, you are literally slow cooking them. You must reduce that direct heat and transfer it to the glass, where it does no damage. You will lose the direct heat and turn it into radiated heat. At the same time, the UV is eliminated and a small amount of light is lost, thus reducing some glare.

We prefer the use of Huper Optik nano-ceramic window films. The optical clarity is unsurpassed.. the performance is higher than conventional metallised films.

Huper Optik film's performance is in the ceramic part, some other high performance films use heat absorbing dyes in the scratch-resistant top layer. This weakens the scratch- resistance and over time, the film loses its clarity and performance....... But of course this fact is conveniently kept from you.

Recession?

The town I grew up in Switzerland houses the headquarters of "Schindler" the lift and escalator manufacturers.

Their profits for 2008 were a record SFR 630 million. (Approximately $NZ 950 million) This is a rise of 128% over last year. Not bad!

Listening to "Radio Pilatus" on the internet, winter is really biting, with trains stopped due to avalanche risks.

And to top it off, Carnival starts tomorrow in Luzern! I should be there........ instead, I'm sweating here in New Zealand... tinting windows!

Not sure if our profits will be just a fraction of "Schindler's" this year?

My advice: Keep giving your customers & staff the best they deserve... the recession is selective..... and life does go on....

Somebody today blamed women's shopping habits for the financial crisis.... personally I think they are trying to stimulate the economy! The reason we have a problem is due to us males not earning enough!

Have you ever bought something, because it was a little bit cheaper than another "similar" product and regretted it?

You have probably found (upon closer inspection) the specifications lower, the knowledge of the salesperson somewhat lacking and possibly getting some pressure to "buy now -special offer running out"

The same can happen in window tinting.

The film can look good when you look at the sample.

The brochures can be glossy, with lots of nice pictures.

The price quite a lot lower than the other quote(s).

Two years later, the film does not look that good anymore. It has not really made such a difference to your comfort. The corners are starting to lift....... the film feels "powdery" or worse.... it has changed colour already......

I often ask myself, why we are having so many of our jobs accepted. Most people (should) get 2-3 quotes. So the acceptance rates should be between 33% and 50%. Not bad, you say, do 2-3 quotes, get a job.

It is fascinating to hear the feedback from our customers, things like:

Glass Vandalism

We went to the Lantern Festival in Auckland last night. As parking is always a problem, we parked in the downtown car park, in a reserved spot for Hybrid vehicles (he he) and walked up to the park.

On the way, we walked along Queen Street and I could not help, noticing the amount of damage done to the shop's windows & doors by graffiti "artists". Strange, window tinting is never far from my thoughts.

We do have a simple solution. Use our anti-graffiti film and your glass is safe from their "art". You simply have the film replaced, without the glass being damaged, at a fraction of the cost of replacing the glass or having it buffed out.

Anti-graffiti film is totally clear and will not distort the view through the glass.

Phone quotes vs visits

Window tinting is a complex process for residential or commercial projects.

Today, I took a call from a lady who needed to protect her art work from the sun.

She explained the situation over the phone and I had a mental picture. Listening to her, I asked a few questions, made some suggestions and was not really prepared to give her a quote.

Fortune had it that I had to visit another client in the area, so made an appointment to see her.

I turned up, looked at the situation and suggested a combination films to give her the best solution. We ended up with a quote for Huper Optik ceramic film in one area, a frosted film in the entrance and a solid vinyl for another situation.

This lady went through the phone book, called #* (well known brand) and got a "I don't know what you're talking about" response, called another one who wanted measurements to give a verbal quote over the phone.

My quote was about twice the phone quote, but this client now has all the information, without any nasty surprises and will go ahead with my suggestions.

Morale of this story? If in business, do care about the needs of the people kind enough to offer you their business!

New External Window Films

Johnson Window Films has released a range of external window films. Unlike most other competitors, offering only a 20% Silver, Johnson Window Films also makes the lesser reflective DN 20 and a lighter DN35 for window tinting on the outside. These films are used in situations, where a tint cannot be installed from the inside.

We are particularly proud to have the Daylight Neutral (DN) as an alternative, because the silver can be just too shiny in residential applications.
External films do not have the same lifespan as a window film applied to the inside; the elements attack the tints. Nevertheless, in some situations, these films are the best or only option.

We have seen a great number of window tinting companies open over the years, cause a stir, and then quietly disappear a short time later. New Carpet? Renovating?

Are you looking at changing your carpets or have you just got new carpet layed?

New Zealand's UV levels are ferocious; a new carpet can start to fade within weeks!
This is not hype, but based on stories told from customers on numerous occasions.

Fading is caused by a combination of UV, heat & light.
Everybody is aware of the UV and consequently want to block the UV. There is a business entirely based on using a clear UV barrier, applied to glass. They state research from some research company is backing their claim of effective UV protection. This is correct. Their product blocks UV by 99%. So does good quality window film, and so does laminated glass.

Reality is that UV is only part of the fading. Unless you address heat & light, you will not get effective fade protection!

Here is the proof:

This clothing shop has two display windows. One is made of plate (ordinary) glass, the other of laminated (UV blocking) glass. The difference? Very little, every 3 weeks, the entire display used to be thrown away, due to noticeable fading.

We tinted the glass using Huper Optik C50, a film stopping 99%UV, 60% IR (infrared heat) and 50% of the light.

A you can tell from the photo, visibility has not be reduced, it is not reflective and is not dark.

The result: Every 3 weeks, when the display changes, the clothes are folded up and sold in the shop, without any damage.

So why would you only want to stop UV?

Spot the fraud!

Are you getting the right advice from your window film advisor? Ask yourself, is he/she promoting the best film for your home,or are they pushing a film they happen to stock?

Some of our dealers are openly admitting that the right film for the customer is the one the dealer just happens to have in the back of his vehicle.

How do you know, if you really get the best?

I suggest that you get more than one quote from reputable firms. Just be aware, the biggest ad or first listing does not mean that they are the best, it simply means they spend more money on advertising. Ask, if they are members of Master Tinters NZ, because members are trustworthy, experienced and knowledgeable.

Ask questions, do not go with the first one, because he/she is cute or friendly. Stay objective, are they answering your questions?
Do not go with the cheapest one, as it seldom represents good value and you will miss out somewhere along the line.
